Public Service Announcement (PSA)

Overview

Public service announcements, or PSAs, are short messages produced and given to radio and television stations. Generally, PSAs are sent as ready-to-air audio or video tapes.

In general, PSAs are used by organizations to:

• Bring awareness to situations or conditions that exist in and affect a community.

• Provide health and safety tips.

• Inform and influence public opinion.

PSA messages:

• Must contain information that is beneficial to the community.

• Must not include controversial or self-serving material.

• Include the most essential information from reputable sources, and provide the source information.

• Use short, upbeat sentences written in everyday language, avoiding the use of negative terminology.

• Tell/ show the benefits of action/information.

• Include a Call For Action.

• Tell viewers/listeners where they can go, what they can do or who they can call.

Assignment Guidelines

Assembled in a production crew of 2-3 members, students will:

  1. Identify a topic appropriate for examination through a PSA

  2. Complete a Planning Packet and submit for approval (must be completed and approved before filming may begin)

  3. Following the three phases of production, produce and submit a finished, exported 1 minute PSA video.

Grading Information

Each student will receive an individual grade for his/her role in the production process.

PSA Topic

Topics taken from the provided topic list are pre-approved. Any other topic must be approved PRIOR to completing this packet and beginning production.

Selected PSA Topic: Discovering Nature

Teacher approval (for topics not on the provided list): ______________________________

In one sentence, summarize the main idea you group is hoping to communicate in your PSA:

Instead of being on our technologies all the time, use that time to be outside.

Think of what you want viewers to think/act/feel/believe/be motivated to do after viewing your video.

The purpose of a PSA is to motivate the actions, thoughts, feelings, and beliefs of a group of viewers. Because all media are constructed with specific values and points of view in mind, portraying a certain feeling is not accidental, incidental, or left up to the view.

Emotion you’re trying to communicate:

Free (adventurous, happy, fulfilled, upbeat)

Creative Concept

Describe your group’s vision for the PSA. Using complete sentences provide an articulated walk-through of what a viewer will see when watching your PSA.

We will start off with kids looking at their phones. Starting from one kid to another. On their phones they will be watching and looking at nature and people who travel. Then we will dive onto the meat where we introduce the idea of going outside and experiencing it for yourself.

List your shooting locations (if you will be filming, if you won’t be filing put N/A).

Outdoor-River Park, School, Neighborhood

Gathering Content

The most critical elements in any PSA are the facts, statistics, opinions, and quotations that you choose to share with your viewers. Without convincing content, you will not be able to motivate viewers to think, feel, believe, and act the way you want them to about your topic.

Use the table below to collect content for your public service announcement.

Content may only come from viable, reputable sources, and must be related to the focal points your group previously identified. You will use this in info in your PSA.
